The teacher draws upon knowledge of content areas, cross-disciplinary skills, learners, the community, and pedagogy to plan instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals.
In order to fulfill this principle, it is necessary to know the other subjects and areas of study, not just music. It is important to know other aspects of subjects, such as, mathematics, history, English, science, and foreign languages. The reason these are important, is because all of these subjects relate to music. Mathematics is related to music because of the counting aspect in music. History is related in the knowing of the history behind music written and eras of music; science is related because of the way the air flows through the body when singing and what the vocal chords do when singing. And also, English and foreign languages are related because of the different languages songs can be in and he need to understand and pronounce what is being sung. Teachers should also be learners, not just the students. They should be willing to learn knew aspects of music and other areas of subjects, in order to keep developing themselves into people with the knowledge of many different things. Teachers should also exercise different types of discipline, and try new approaches towards their students with their discipline strategies. They should also keep the community in which they are teaching in mind when planning their instructions towards students to know what to do and what not to do when teaching in the classroom. Teachers will work with many different types of students that will have different ways of thinking and different ways of living than others. Teachers need to know how to teach students that require different ways of learning, and how to treat students who may not learn like others students do. In music, teachers need to work with all their students in a way that is comfortable to the students and will be easiest for them to learn.
I feel I need to further my knowledge of other subjects and areas. I need to be able to know other subjects and relate them to music and what I will be teaching. I need to learn different types of disciplines in order to know how to properly discipline all students. I feel I need practice with the disciplinary aspect of teaching, and work to understand fully what types of disciplines work for students. I feel I a good idea on what it takes to further my learning and to keep learning, and I feel that it will take me time to figure out what types of learning styles other students have to be able to teach them in the way they understand. I would say I have much growing to do in this principle in all the aspects it covers.
The core classes I will take at Ball State are the ones that will help me develop the knowledge of other areas of study and how to relate them to music. I will be taking mathematics, history, sociology, English, and Spanish. All these classes will help me to grow in the areas I am not the most familiar with and broaden my learning. I will also be taking Music Education, which will help me plan for the instruction part of my teaching. I will be able to learn how to establish discipline, and how students learn, and how to act towards all aspects of the classroom I will be teaching.
MUSE 150 Artifact: Reading Log 3 Rationale: Here is an artifact from my music education 150 course on how I am beginning to understand about the importance of effective music teaching and all that is applied to teaching. This artifact reflects the many skills and strategies that can be used when teaching to have the be the most effective for students' learning.
MUSE 258- Vocal Techniques Artifact: Two Minute Peer Teaching Rationale: This artifact pertains to InTASC Standard 7 because it is a lesson plan I put together for a teaching in my MUSE 258 vocal technique course. I had to plan this lesson for instruction in my class, as well as prepare and practice for it to be carried out in a successful way. My vocal techniques course taught me how to plan effective lessons that will be easy to follow for me as well as a substitute when they come in. It will also be beneficial to my students when I apply it to my classroom and can control the progression of my lesson during the class.
MUSE 356- Choral Methods 1 Artifact: Peer Teaching #2 Lesson Plan Rationale: As I have gone through the courses at Ball State University, I have developed lesson plans for peer teachings as well as for middle school classrooms. This artifact is a lesson plan from my choral methods course, and if this peer teaching and the two minute peer teaching above are compared, one can see the growth of the lessons from course to course. There is a great deal of planning that goes into making a lesson and carrying it out, and I have had the opportunity to work on my skills to develop plans that when implemented will support learner growth and development.
MUSE 376- Choral Methods 2 Artifact: Peer Teaching #1 Lesson Plan Rationale: This artifact is an example of the lesson plan I prepared for a peer teaching in this course this semester. When comparing this lesson plan to the peer teaching 2 lesson plan and the two minute peer teaching, my ability to develop a well-structured and easy to follow lesson plan has grown. I have had a great deal of practice developing these lesson plans and have become comfortable with preparing them and following them every day. I feel that the lessons I prepare are effective for student growth and this lesson plan shows that.
Student Teaching Artifact: Kindergarten Steady Beat Unit Rationale: Throughout student teaching, my knowledge of planning and creating lesson plans has grown, and I have learned a great amount of what goes into make a lesson successful for all students. I learned how to plan for future lessons and base lessons on entire units instead of the day-to-day ideas. I utilized making lists of potential songs and concepts to prepare in the units, and then prepared those lessons ahead of time to make all of them flow into one another. Using these skills and experiencing the planning process that my cooperating teacher goes through, I found that these units and plans are extremely helpful when looking at the big picture of teaching. Realizing what concepts should be taught to which class, and then what songs should be taught to carry out these concepts helps me to realize how to be prepared and taking control of my schedule in the classroom. Also, if there is some kind of change that needs to be made, with a large unit planned, it can be easily changed and moved around if need be because everything is prepared and I am knowledgeable of what is to happen when. I will use these lists in the future when I planning for my future classes and what I want to accomplish for long-term and short-term goals. The artifact attached is a list of the songs and focuses of the Kindergarten Steady Beat Unit I created while student teaching. This type of artifact helped me to plan my lessons more efficiently and know what my trajectory was for the unit. Having all of this planned out helped me know what I could do in my future lessons and what focuses each song can have for the unit. I will use lists like these to plan out future lessons and units.
